Congratulations to THE STAR newspaper for a successful "Safe Home Campaign", held in conjunction with IRDA,Danga Bay City Mall and PDRM on 30th May 2009.
The event was officiated by Johor Chief police officer,YDH DCP Dato Mohd.Mokhtar bin Hj. Mohd Shariff, attended by IRDA CEO Encik Harun Hj. Johari, IRDA Vice- President Dato'Benjamin Hj.Hasbie and Danga Bay City Mall Managing Director Dato' T.K Lim.
I was invited to speak on the topic of Community Policing(Cp), the TSM experience and its practicability.
I held the opinion that to make Cp successful, we need to adopt the concept of 3Ps: People, Police & The Press.
Our newspapers play a vital role in disseminating valuable information and government policies to the masses.
I was delighted when it's editor, Mr.Lourdes Charles informed me that THE STAR had indeed started the crime prevention and awareness campaign nationwide about 20 years ago. (Well done, well done, go reach for THE STAR(S)!! )
Thumbs up for Cp! From Left: IRDA Vice president Dato' Benjamin, Johor CPO Dato' Mokhtar, myself and IRDA CEO Encik Harun Hj. Johari
During my speech,I put my words into simple terms, that Cp is as easy as ABC. It could be adopted by anyone, anytime and anywhere. It's about simple and effective strategies we practice in everyday's lives.
The public was asked to be the "eyes and the ears" to our men in blue.
I say:
"God is great because everyone of us was given a pair of eyes. This is what we called the free CCTVs. It is maintainance free and mobile."
"If we activate our CCTVs, we can detect unwanted incidents by providing the accurate information to the police at the earliest possible time to save lives."
Awareness via educating the public. By conducting a coloring competition, the organisers had attracted so many children participation and their parents had eventually showed up during the event. A very smart idea...in Cp!
" If we have 500 audiences in this shoping mall, it also mean we have 500 pairs of CCTVs today.
"These CCTVs will move around Johor Baru,to places like Tampoi, Kempas, Johor Jaya or Nusajaya after our program ended today."
"Therefore, in order to detect crime or to prevent crime, please activate the you free CCTVs and those of your family members ".
All had a good laugh because to prevent crime is just that simple!
My new found Cp friend, a youthful, hard working and dedicated pressman in Mr.Nelson Benjamin who originated from Melaka.
Attacking the police for slow responce is a standard excuse but what we need is from the people is constructive critisms. The public must change their mindset and adopt a new attitude, that is to be co-operative and pro-active.
Our TSM experience with IPD Muar had taught us the service delivery by our men in blue is getting better and more transparent.
Danga Bay City Mall is so creative that they provided a space on the ground floor for our youth and children to brush up their sporting talents under the watchful eyes of the parents and shoppers. In Cp context, we call it "a controlled and self-contained" environment.
In Johor, you may ring up the police hotline 07-2212 999, sms Rakan Cop 32728 or to send an e-mail to polisjohor@gov.my
I also thanked Mr.Nelson Benjamin,JB bureau chief of Star Publications for his kind invitation and suggestions.
Lastly, I encouraged all to set up Residents Association(RA) and those already in place, they must be sincere and stay united in adopting Cp to make their housing area is safer, better and happier place.
