Who says you can’t strike it rich in garbage?

By HAMDAN RAJA ABDULLAH, The Star page N3

MUAR: Many Taman Sri Maharani residents are richer, thanks to a brand new garbage truck.
Lady luck smiled on those who bought the truck’s registration number with Sports Toto 4D.
The number 8814 won first prize in the draw.

The truck was brought to the housing area by the Muar Municipal Council and Southern Waste Management on Sunday to demonstrate collection using the new wheel-garbage bins.

There, the residents also noticed the number on the registration plate.

Taman Sri Maharani Residents Association secretary Chua Teck Boon said many residents who bought the number could not believe their luck.

“Many thought it was a joke last night when someone said the truck’s registration number had hit first prize in the Sports Toto 4D draw.

“Some even rushed downtown to buy the 4D result slips and returned with a smile on their faces,” he said yesterday.

Chua, who does not play 4D, said some of the residents even wanted to look for the garbage truck in the morning just to give it a big kiss.

The truck was used by Southern Waste Management and the council to demonstrate garbage collection when they launched the use of wheel-garbage bins in housing residents in the area.

Council president Wahab Ridwan said many of the lucky residents called and sent SMS text telling him about their good fortune.
“It’s the residents’ luck and we are happy for them,” Wahab added.

Garbage on wheels

By HAMDAN RAJA ABDULLAH, The Star

MUAR: Taman Sri Maharani here has been picked by Southern Waste Management (SWM) as a model housing estate to introduce the use of wheeled garbage bins in Muar.

This residential area of about 170 houses in Jalan Daud here received free bins from the company recently.

SWM group general manager Adnan Ibrahim said the company picked Sri Maharani as it had several excellent community-related programmes for residents.

User-friendly: Taman Sri Maharani Residents Association assistant secretary Tee Seng Chai (third from left) and Muar municipal councillor Helen Wong (second from left) looking at one of the bins.

“It is not very big and has a close-knit community where all residents regardless of race join hands in looking after the housing estate,” he said.

The area was also the first in Muar to launch a community policing programme, he said during a presentation of bins by Muar Municipal Council president Wahab Ridwan.

Adnan said Taman Sri Maharani was only the third housing area in the state to receive the bins in over a decade, after Taman Melodies and Taman Putri Wangsa, both in Johor Baru.

He said the two areas in Johor Baru started using the bins 11 years ago and the company felt it was time to introduce the system in Muar.

Works well: Residents Association chairman Koon Chew Fatt (left), Adnan (third from left and Muar Municipal Council president Wahab Ridwan giving the thumbs-up during a demonstration of waste collection by a truck

The new bin had the capacity to hold 120 litres of garbage compared to the regular 80-litre bin, he said, adding that the bigger size could reduce the number of collections.

“With normal bins, we have to collect at least three times a week, but with the new bins, we can cut the frequency to twice weekly,” he said.
Wahab said Muar residents threw out 250,000kg of garbage every day and more than 5% of the waste could be recycled or reused.

He said it was important for people to have a strong awareness about recycling and reusing items.

People should adopt recycling and reusing waste materials to reduce waste collection by 40% in the next five years.
Earlier, Taman Sri Maharani Residents Association secretary Chua Teck Boon commended SWM and the council for making the housing estate a model residential area in Muar.
He said the residents were happy to receive the bins and pledged to co-operate fully with the council and SWM in utilising the system.

“We will ensure that all the residents use the bins as instructed by SWM and will recycle and reuse waste materials,” he added.

Muar shows how it's done

New Straits Times ,Page 18, 4th December 2009

Muar shows how it's done

Balai Polis Bergerak in action along Jalan Ali,Muar

THE people of Muar are feeling safer these days because of the strong presence of police personnel on the streets, especially in areas hard hit by crime. It has somehow boosted public confidence and given local businesses a better sense of security.

The Muar police force has been quite innovative in its strategy to reduce street crime. The police's latest strategy is Balai Polis Bergerak -- a cute mini police station on wheels.

This mobile unit, mannned by two police officers, is constantly on the move between crime hotspots in Muar town. It has an open-door policy to allow the public to make inquiries. Not surprisingly, it has been welcomed by all.

While such police initiatives are to be welcomed, the public, too, should be proactive in preventing crime. Malaysians in general should abandon their tidak apa attitude and not depend solely on police for protection. In fact, crime prevention is a shared responsibility. Everybody has a duty to work smart along with the men in blue to prevent crime.

Look! The doors are open. This open- door policy means every citizen can make enquiry on the spot.

One way to do so is form a residents' association and link up with the local council. The Muar municipal council recently announced a subsidy of RM300 per year for residents associations that are proactive in crime-prevention measures.

Regular patroling around housing estates in Muar.

Roping in Rukun Tetangga and Rela is another alternative. But by far the best option is to have local residents, young and old, to collaborate with the police and the local council in a community policing (CP) campaign.

Under the dynamic leadership of Muar police chief, ACP Mohd Nasir Ramli, community policing is getting popular among the locals. As the district police chief has pointed out, residents are like the eyes and ears of police.

A 20 per cent reduction in crime nationwide, as envisioned by the Home Minister recently, will become reality only if the public and the police can see eye to eye and work hand in hand with total sincerity and mutual trust.

I sincerely hope that the strong presence of police will become a permanent feature in Muar town.

Crack down on cyber cafes in Muar

Good move by council
(this article is written by a peace loving Muarian,Kent Chua and published on NST dated 02 December 2009)

Briefing by Muar OCPD to officers of PDRM,D.O office and MPM. Looking on were municipal council president, fellow councillors and Muar Assistant Distrcit Officer.

I WOULD like to congratulate the Muar Municipal Council for rejecting 14 new Internet cafe licence applications, and to review the existing 42 licences recently.

Council president Abdul Wahab Ridwan and all the municipal councillors stood firm on the issue.

We trusted the judgment of the council on this matter because, under a directive by the Housing and Local Government Ministry dated 2004, all local and municipal councils had been asked to freeze new licences for Internet cafes.

Rows of bicycles parked infront of the premise at 1a.m in the morning!! Wonder who's kids were missing from the beds at home?

Many of those outlets had abused the stipulated conditions and flouted the laws by operating and allowing entry to children below 18 years of age.

Muar municipal council president (on blue cap) advising the children not to be addicted to video games. A total of 23 students were advised to return to hostel after 2 a.m!

These youngsters who were addicted to the games would mix with bad influence and turn into bad apples.

Under the new directive, all applicants have to seek approval first from the local area councillors or community leaders, and then obtain the green light from the police and the Fire and Rescue Department.

Ops Sikap -The Attitude Problems

The Attitude problems of Malaysians
-Ops Sikap

Ops Sikap was launched in Muar before Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2009 by IGP Tan Sri Musa Hassan lately.

"Think of your loved ones" was once chosen as the tagline for our road safety campaign, to remind Malaysians to take care of their own safety, have a safe journey back to their home towns and celebrate along with the loved ones.

Ah Huat, a peace loving citizen of Taman Pertama Indah, Sg.Abong with IGP Tan Sri Musa Hassan during the buka puasa at Masjid Jamek,Jalan Petri Muar.

Somehow the death rates on the roads could not be reduced because of the typical Malaysian attitude and bad habits of driving. Every festive seasons, many lives were sacrified beca
use of bad driving habits.

Former Prime Minsiter Tun Dr.Mahathir Mohammad had cried before begging Malaysians not to play a fool while behind the wheels. Each time when his writes his Raya Aidilfitri greeting he reminded Malaysians not to speed but our countrymen always fail to take note on his advice.

During the press interview in Muar, IGP Tan Sri Musa says:

"Malaysians generally are good people with a heart of gold, but once he or she is behind the wheels then he or she could turn into a monster."

From Left: Assistant Muar OCPD Supt.Lee Chun Guan, YDP for Majlis Perbandaran Muar Tuan Hj.Abdul Wahab bin Ridwan and Johor Police Chief YDH DCP Dato' Hj. Mohd. Mokhtar bin Mohd Shariff.

As for myself, I remember vividly a warning given by my driving instructor many years ago while I was attending the driving school ceremah before getting my driving licence.

He says: "Tuan-tuan and puan-puan sekalian, jika anda telah lulus dalam ujian memandu nanti, nasihat saya yang terakhir adalah supaya anda jangan mematikan orang di jalan raya!"

This award is actually meaningful when the
TSM remains active and productive since 2006. It has 170 houses and TSM has been adopted as a model by IPK Johor for Horizontal Policing under the concept of Community Policing (CP).

Congratulations to all residents of TSM.

Syabas & Tahniah!
